BY DAWN NEWSPAPER
Interview with Mr. Ovais Yazdani, Managing Director of White House Grammar School.
Published on February 8, 2020
The following is an interview with Mr. Ovais Yazdani, Managing Director of White House Grammar School. Mr. Yazdani runs White House Grammar School, with its Main Campus in Gulshan, and manages a growing network of branches across the city. He holds an MSc in Management of Training and Development in Education from the University of Edinburgh and a BSc in Economics and Mathematics from the Lahore University of Management Sciences. He has significant experience in the field of education and development, having worked for several renowned organizations such as the International Growth Centre at London School of Economics, the Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN) on a World Bank project and with the Federal Ministry of Education, among others. Mr. Yazdani was also selected by the Acumen Fund in 2016 to their prestigious Regional Fellowship Programme that fosters a strong network of social leaders from around the world. He has been featured by the University of Edinburgh as one of its successful alumni of the decade as well as the British Council’s Study UK Magazine.
What is the background of White House Grammar School, as well as your role in running the institution today?
White House Grammar School (WHGS) was founded by my mother, Mrs Nuzhat Yazdani, in 1981 on the principle of providing affordable and accessible education to children from all walks of life without comprising on quality. Early on in her career, she sought ways to encourage enrollment in schools and strived to make quality private education accessible for the masses. She created an institution where merit was the only criteria for admission, and kindness and respect were the only ways to treat individuals.
One of her life’s greatest contributions towards education came in the form of increasing accessibility to quality education through the building of schools in some of the under-developed areas of Karachi. Whilst continuing to personally oversee her flagship institution of WHGS Main Campus (Gulshan), she led the development of 16 independent campuses in her lifetime in resource-constrained areas across the city.
During the early years of White House Grammar School, Mrs Yazdani was guided by renowned patrons who were successful in their respective fields, including the first mayor of Karachi - Mr. Hakeem Mohammed Ahsan, as well as Dr. Salim-Uzzaman-Siddiqui who was one of Pakistan’s pioneer scientists and helped develop the science laboratory at the school.
Under her leadership, WHGS was one of the early adopters of the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE), formerly known as the Cambridge International Examination (CIE) system. Additionally, the school won the ‘Best School of the Year Award’ by the Board of Secondary Education, Karachi (BSEK) for six consecutive years. WHGS students have gone on to become world-record holders and lead global organizations, along with attaining remarkable achievements in the fields of science, technology, business and social development. Over 33,000 students have studied at WHGS to date. Our alumni include graduates of renowned higher education institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Cambridge, as well as the leading universities of Pakistan.
As Managing Director, I have continued to honor Mrs. Yazdani’s legacy through my work in running operations at the flagship Main Campus in Gulshan while also managing a growing network of branches in less-developed areas across the city. I have been able to successfully grow and restructure the organization while instating a social entrepreneurship model to keep our founder’s vision alive; through the model, a significant number of our students currently receive financial aid. Additionally, following Mrs. Yazdani’s penchant for innovation at WHGS, over the years I have introduced several modules and programmes at the school, such as the School Heath Education Programme supported by Harvard School of Public Health, FranklinCovey’s Leader in Me® programme, STEM interventions, Urban Farming and Personal Enrichment Curriculum for students, among others.
White House Grammar School – Main Campus, established at ST-9, Block 4, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, remains the founder’s legacy, where those she mentored strive on a daily basis to carry on her vision and keep her legacy alive to the best of their ability.
What sets White House Grammar School (Gulshan Main Campus) apart from other schools?
White House Grammar School (Gulshan Main Campus) operates on a social entrepreneurship model, with affordable fees and a very generous financial aid and scholarship system that does not deny any deserving student the right to quality education. Most importantly, despite the affordability of tuition, students at WHGS receive high quality education consisting of an innovative curriculum and extra-curricular modules that are at par with Karachi’s high-priced schools. In fact, WHGS has been one of the pioneer schools to offer several of its current modules and services, from introducing Social and Emotional Learning curriculum to becoming one of the first schools in Karachi to offer fencing, an Olympic sport.
Apart from fostering a vibrant culture of sports, music and arts, we have enriched the education curriculum at our premier institution of WHGS Main Campus through the implementation of several initiatives, such as a School Health Programme that is supported by Harvard University and focuses on improving the physical and mental wellbeing of students through routine health checks and counseling, as well as FranklinCovey Education’s Leader in Me® programme that has been implemented by thousands of schools in over 50 countries. As a certified professional, I continue to train our students, staff and parents on leadership and life skills, as well as principles of personal, interpersonal and organizational effectiveness. Similarly, our Citizenship Education module, Personal Enrichment Curriculum (including yoga, Little Chefs, archery, mixed martial arts, student societies, et cetera) and the Learning Garden Programme to encourage horticulture and urban farming, have all proved to be successful in providing students with a well-rounded education. Moreover, we have tried to counter the lack of focus on science learning in Pakistani schools by investing in STEM education resources and robotics, as well as routinely organizing science fairs to motivate students towards science and technology.
Furthermore, by increasing the use of technology to streamline our own operations and administrative procedures, WHGS (Gulshan Main Campus) has currently developed a user-friendly mobile phone app that allows parents to view announcements, grades and attendance in real time.
